Situated on the banks of the famous Grand Canal next to the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Fondaco dei Tedeschi is amongst the most historically significant buildings in Venice as well as one of the largest.
The latest updates have seen a collaboration on the buildings restoration by renowned architects Jamie Fobert Architects for the retail interiors and OMA for the building fabric and public areas. We are honor to work alongside both architects to develop lighting concepts that would respond to the architectural ambitions of the project whilst meeting the sensitive restrictions of this historic building.
The combination of two architects, the local preservation authority and effectively two clients made this a very politically sensitive project to work on with many barriers to solve and approvals to gain. Any interventions on the building were closely critiqued, evaluated and monitored from many different directions, often with opposing views. Despite all odds, we worked closely with the architects to create layers of interest for customers using discreet installation techniques within the furniture allied with fittings of compact size, low brightness optics and a simple style within the main ceiling to minimize distraction from the stunning interior architecture and design.
