Mark Rothko Exhibition at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art Moscow
To light Rothko is to work close to the threshold of visibility. Guided by the museum team’s brief, the scheme was carefully focused and commissioned to the exact light levels approved for the paintings, so that the gallery could hold the quiet intensity the work demands. Rather than imposing atmosphere from the outside, the lighting was shaped to protect the conditions of looking: low, precise and almost unseen. Within that restraint, colour, edge and surface are allowed to unfold gradually, creating a contemplative setting in which the viewer meets the work through stillness, duration and careful attention. Low and subtle illumination is also consistent with public museum guidance for Rothko displays.
