As the largest denim department in the world covering 26,000 sq feet and stocks 60 individual brands, the design brief was to develop an elegant lighting concept that reflect the prestigious retail environment, enhance and be sympathetic to Selfridges newly restored classic architectural features of its listed status. For this reason, the visual appearance of the lighting was to be discreet, low brightness and trim-less with high quality detailing.
One key requirement was the design of a unique “Line of Light” sculpture that lead shoppers from the entry portal to the Fit Studio where the fitting rooms were to be a key design feature and point of interest. We worked closely with the interior architects HMKM and bespoke specialist TM Lighting to develop an elegant yet robust RGB LED opal acrylic bar that is suspended to the lower ceiling and dance between the higher coffer ceiling. It introduces a strong visual feature that thread through the interior and land at the Fit Studio fitting rooms where a white light pendant is suspended in each room.
The pendant changes to blue (in tune with the Line of Light) via a motion sensor when the customer enters the fitting room. If the customer needs assistance a button is pressed inside the fitting room and the pendant flashes - another push and it stops flashing. The pendant returns to white light when the room is unoccupied.
